Grow your own heritage apples

Sunday, 24th July, 2011   10.00 am
1 Spencer Street, Balingup

Want to grow your own heritage apples but can’t source the trees?

As part of a recent search for old varieties of apples for Taste of the Blackwood I stumbled across an 80 year old orchard in Bridgetown. It was like finding treasure. Rokewood, Yates, Orange Pippin and Democrat are just some of the varieties found in this timeless orchard and the owner has very generously granted us permission to take wood for grafting.

Danny Cohen is a young horticulturist that has called Balingup home for only 3 years. Having received his Diploma in Horticulture at Burnley College (University of Melbourne), Danny’s career has allowed him to cultivate a passion for food bearing plants. Originally from Victoria, he has found his way to Balingup and we now have the good fortune to have his vast knowledge and enthusiasm close at hand.

So join us for a morning with Danny as he teaches the art and value of grafting. In a hands on workshop he will demonstrate different methods of grafting and explain how and why grafting is used. Root stock and wood from several varieties of heritage apples will be provided and during the workshop participants will prepare and graft their choice of trees.

Each participant will go home with their own newly grafted trees and with newly acquired skills that will be invaluable in their future gardening endeavours.

Cost: $50.00 per person (morning tea included)

What you need to bring: Your secateurs, Appropriate warm clothing for working outside. Please note, this is an interactive workshop and numbers are strictly limited.
